84% Vote in First Phase, GP Polls Largely Peaceful

Police strictly prohibited winning candidates or their followers from holding victory rallies, large gatherings, bike rallies, processions, or events involving DJs. Police warned that legal cases would be registered immediately for any violations.

About 84.28 per cent of voters exercised their ballots in the first phase of the gram panchayat elections across the state on Thursday.

The first phase covered 56,19,430 voters — about 28.78 lakh women, 27.41 lakh men, and 201 other voters.

The highest polling percentage was recorded in Yadadri district at 92 per cent, while Adilabad had the lowest turnout at 75.28 per cent.

The voting percentages in other districts were:

Nalgonda (90.53%), Suryapet (90.18%), Khammam (90.16%), Medak (88.46%), Jangaon (87.33%), Warangal (86.83%), Hanamkonda (83.96%), Nirmal (80.28%), Mancherial (80.04%), and Mulugu (78.65%).

Polling was largely peaceful, though some incidents were reported in several villages during polling and the counting of votes.

A clash erupted at Jadi Jamalpur of Bodhan mandal in Nizamabad district when a group tried to storm a vote-counting centre. Police stopped them and resorted to a lathicharge, leading to a scuffle. The counting process resumed after additional police forces were deployed, sources said.
