Minor dispute between students escalates into late-night clash at JNTU-Hyderabad
Hyderabad: At least eight students were detained, and three others are being traced after a clash between residents of the Manjeera and Gautami hostels at Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University‑Hyderabad in the early hours of Friday, police said.
Kukatpally DCP Riti Raj said the incident began with a minor dispute between two students and later escalated into a group clash. Police received a call around 12.30 am and reached the campus, where they brought the situation under control. Another call around 2.30 am prompted a second visit, during which students involved were identified.
According to the DCP, one student went to speak to another, but the exchange turned aggressive and one pushed the other, leaving third‑year student Durga Prasad injured.
A student organiser of the Teej event said the clash had no connection with the celebrations. “The Teej immersion programme was completed by 10 pm, whereas this incident took place around 2 am,” he said.
Students alleged that a third‑year mechanical engineering student had harassed a girl from the same batch. After her friends questioned him, both sides dispersed, but later a group of around 40 people attacked students at Manjeera Hostel. Police took the boy to the station, but another confrontation near the main gate escalated into a fight. A video of the clash went viral.
The girl later filed a complaint, leading to an FIR and her statement being recorded by the DCP. Meanwhile, counter‑petitions were filed against 19 students for allegedly obstructing a police officer. They were detained, served notices and later released.
Ritiraj said police would hold discussions with the principal and hostel wardens to establish a mechanism for handling disputes on hostel premises, including identifying who should respond and the procedure to be followed. Police were continuing their investigation into the clash and the events that led to it.
