54 Degree Colleges Record Zero Admissions

For the 2025–26 academic year, following all rounds of DOST counselling, around 53 per cent of seats remained vacant.

Hyderabad: As many as 54 degree colleges recorded zero admissions in the academic year 2025–26. Of them, 53 were under private management and one was a government degree college. Telangana Council of Higher Education Chairman Prof. V. Balakista Reddy said most of the colleges with no students were located in rural and remote areas of the state. He noted that colleges failing to secure a single admission for three consecutive years could face disaffiliation.

The council will advise universities to take necessary action against colleges with zero admissions, he added.

While 830 degree colleges offered 3,77,907 seats, only 1,76,170 were filled through DOST. In total, including DOST, residential and non‑DOST colleges, only 2,05,140 seats were filled out of 4,40,107 across 969 institutions.

University‑wise data showed nearly 99,000 seats vacant under Osmania University, with only 99,242 of 1,98,107 seats filled in 417 colleges. More than 60,000 seats were unfilled in Kakatiya University affiliated colleges. Likewise, 19,105 seats under Palamuru University and 15,552 seats under Mahatma Gandhi University, Nalgonda, remained vacant.

In course preferences, B.Com was the most opted undergraduate stream with 76,790 enrolments, followed by B.Sc Physical Science with 37,528 admissions and B.Sc Life Science with 36,445. B.A and BBA programmes recorded 29,849 and 17,864 enrolments respectively.
