50 pc quota cap already breached: Krishnaiah

BJP’s Rajya Sabha member and BC welfare association president R. Krishnaiah said the government should provide reservation by law and not promise to implement 42 per cent reservation at the party level in the panchayat elections

Hyderabad: The BJP’s Rajya Sabha member and BC welfare association president R. Krishnaiah said the government should provide reservation by law and not promise to implement 42 per cent reservation at the party level in the panchayat elections.

He said by agreeing to 10 per cent reservation for the economically backward among the forward castes, the Supreme Court had already flouted the 50 per cent cap.

Fourteen BC organisations which met under the aegis of Neela Venkatesh on Wednesday chalked out their future programme. The organisations have sought the convening of a meeting of all parties on the issue.

Krishnaiah said, “We sought correction of mistakes in the caste census during our meeting with BC welfare minister Ponnam Prabhakar but the report was given without doing so. The government should enact a law mandating 42 per cent reservation. If any legal issues arise we will struggle but not taking any steps for making quota legal is wrong. Quota should be first increased though a dispute exists on the percentage of BCs.”
