5 Children At Anganwadi Centre Fall Sick After Suspected Food Poisoning

Five children fell sick after eating food at an Anganwadi centre in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district and were shifted to Khammam government hospital.

Five children at Anganwadi Centre-3 in Kistaram of Sathupally mandal in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district fell sick on Tuesday after consuming rice with curry prepared with red gram and leafy vegetables. They were shifted to the government general hospital in Khammam for treatment.

The children fell sick after consuming the food. The incident came to light on Thursday, three days after it occurred, with the Anganwadi staff and officials allegedly keeping the matter secret.

The parents said doctors informed them that the children's ECGs were showing abnormal readings. They also said doctors at the Khammam GGH were not accepting their request to discharge the children so they could be admitted to private hospitals for further treatment.

Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) K. Sathyavathi said the parents brought the matter to her notice on Thursday. She said measures would be taken to ensure the children received the best medical treatment and an enquiry would be conducted.

She said action would be taken against Anganwadi centre staff found responsible for the incident.
