44 Students Fall Ill After Having Semiya Kheer At Kondapur School

HYDERABAD: At least 44 students of MPPS Chandra Naik thanda in Kondapur fell ill on Friday afternoon after consuming semiya kheer served under the Akshaya Patra Mid-Day Meal scheme, the Madhapur police said.
According to Madhapur sub-inspector Narayan Singh, 102 students were served lunch as part of the mid-day meal. Shortly after consuming the dessert, several children began vomiting and complained of severe, as a result of suspected food poisoning. The incident occurred around 3 pm.
After learning of the students falling sick, the school staff and local authorities rushed them to Kondapur Area Hospital for treatment.
Of the 44 students who reported symptoms, six were shifted to another private hospital in Gachibowli, for better care. Police said all the children admitted to both hospitals are stable and out of danger, and most are likely to be discharged soon.
The local police reached the spot and have been assisting in the shifting of the students to the hospital. Parents of all the students were informed of the incident, who rushed to the Kondapur area hospital.
No case has been registered. SI Singh said, “Doctors confirmed the food poisoning occurred due to the sweet but further inquiries were underway to determine what caused its contamination.”
Education department officials added that the school receives meals from a centralised Akshaya Patra kitchen, as no mid-day-meal staff are stationed on the premises.
In a statement to the media, the district education officer said: “Most students have recovered and were discharged. Six others were sent to Rainbow Hospital, and medical tests confirmed no serious health issues. All students are safe.”
Education officials reviewed the situation with Serilingampally mandal officers, and a detailed inquiry into drinking water, mid-day meals and school hygiene is underway, he added.
