3 workers buried alive in soil collapse at LB Nagar

Hyderabad: Three workers from a family died and another person suffered severe injuries when mud collapsed over them during an excavation work at Mansoorabad near LB Nagar on Wednesday. The victims were identified as A. Veeraiah, 42 and his son A Ramu, 22, and his nephew Srinivas, 20. The injured person was identified as Bikshapati, 35, a native of Mallepalli.

When the accident occurred the workers were digging soil for laying footing for a commercial building. The rescue process began after a worker called ‘Dial 100’ at 10:20 am to report the incident. The LB Nagar police and DRF teams reached the spot within seven to ten minutes.

"Once we reached the location, we saw 10 workers. They informed us that four people were stuck beneath the mud. We immediately used a crane to carefully dig through the mud to locate the victims," said a police officer.

Initially, they recovered the bodies of Veeraiah and Srinivas, and rescued the injured worker Bikshapati. However, Ramu’s body was located later. All the bodies were taken to Osmania Hospital for postmortem examination.

According to a GHMC official, soil erosion occurred at the excavated portion of the construction site. “As the soil shifted and collapsed, it fell on the workers who were present at the site,” he said.

Veeriah belonged to Konijerla mandal in Khammam. His family, which consists of his wife and two sons, moved to Pedda Amberpet three years ago and started taking up work at construction sites for livelihood.

As Veeraiah's sister passed away a year ago and her alcoholic husband neglected his two sons, he took on the responsibility of his two nephews — one of whom died in the accident.

"He (Veeraiah) was a selfless and generous man. He treated his nephews like his sons and got them to Hyderabad. He used to take Srinivas along with him for work and sent his brother Srinath to school, who is currently studying Class 10 in a government school in Pedda Amberpet," said Balakrishna, Veeriah's cousin.

The police registered a case under BNS Section 106 (1) which relates to causing death by negligence.
