22 Students Fall Ill; ‘Food Poisoning’ At Private School Hostel

NALGONDA: Twenty-two students of a private school hostel at Nakrekal in this district fell ill after consuming allegedly contaminated food on Monday.

The incident occurred at the hostel of AVM School. According to the students, they had vomiting and stomach pain after lunch. The food, they said, had a plastic-like smell.

All the affected students were taken to a private hospital in Nakrekal for treatment. Their condition was reported stable.

Some parents and students said the school management asked them to bear the hospital expenses.

The students said they had complained to hostel staff about the plastic-like smell from the food before eating it, but their concerns were ignored. Unhygienic food was being served in the hostel and the students who raised complaints were targeted by the hostel warden, they said.

K. Varalakshmi, mother of a student from Palem, said the school was serving unhygienic food despite collecting substantial fees from students.

BRSV state general secretary B Nagarjuna alleged that similar food poisoning incidents had occurred earlier too at the hostel. Officials had failed to act against the school owned by former TRSMA state president K. Papi Reddy.

He demanded that the food safety department inspect the hostel kitchen, mess and food stocks.
