HYDERABAD: Hyderabad City Police seized 2,149 vehicles during a citywide special drive, ‘Operation Kavach,’ on Thursday night to crack down on tampered, fake and missing vehicle number plates.

The special drive was conducted between 10 pm and midnight across the city, with police primarily focusing on number plate tampering, which is often done by criminals to evade detection and commit offences anonymously, besides causing innocent vehicle owners to receive wrongful e-challans and face legal complications.

As part of the operation, police established checking points at key locations under every police station jurisdiction and inspected a total of 12,098 vehicles, including 8,802 two-wheelers, 1,693 four-wheelers and 1,623 autorickshaws.

During inspections, police identified 1,406 vehicles with irregular or tampered number plates, 1,132 vehicles operating without original registration plates and 69 vehicles allegedly using fake number plates. A total of 2,149 vehicles were seized for violating rules, including 2,046 two-wheelers, 52 four-wheelers and 51 autorickshaws.

Hyderabad police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar personally inspected vehicle checking at several locations, including Jubilee Hills-Venkatagiri, Madhuranagar-Krishna Kanth Park, Borabanda-Pili Dargah, Sanathnagar and Ameerpet-Sathyam Theatre junction. He also interacted with motorists whose number plates violated norms and directed officials to initiate legal action against deliberate offenders.

Sajjanar stated that number plate tampering would not be treated as a mere traffic violation, warning that criminal cases including cheating and forgery could be charged against violators. He urged motorists to maintain clearly visible number plates as per transport department norms and carry all relevant vehicle documents while travelling.
Police said Operation Kavach would continue in phases and cover all categories of vehicles in the coming days.
