2 TG Scientists Elected to Royal Society
IIT-Hyderabad-linked duo honoured for global impact in tech and science

Hyderabad: Two scientists with roots in Telangana and strong academic links to IIT Hyderabad—Prof. Chennupati Jagadish and Dr. Mallikarjun Tatipamula have been elected Fellows of the Royal Society (FRS), one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious scientific honours.
Founded in 1660, the Royal Society recognises individuals whose work has made a lasting global impact in science, engineering, or medicine. With this honour, the two join the ranks of Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein and C.V. Raman.
Prof. Jagadish, currently Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the Australian National University, is renowned for his pioneering work in semiconductor nanotechnology, photonics and optoelectronics. His research has advanced technologies in solar cells, lasers and medical imaging. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at IIT Hyderabad, where he mentors students and researchers.
Born in Vallurupalem and raised in Arekayalapadu, Telangana, Prof. Jagadish recalled studying by kerosene lamp. “Without the support of my teachers and mentors, I’d have remained in the fields. This honour reflects the power of persistence and learning,” he said.
Dr Mallikarjun Tatipamula, chief technology officer at Ericsson, has led innovations in 4G, 5G and now 6G systems. Originally from Warangal, he was inspired by the ten-year wait for a landline phone in his childhood. “It’s not just about faster networks, it’s about solving problems in health, education and agriculture,” he said. As a visiting faculty member at IIT Hyderabad, he contributes to research strategy and technological guidance.
Both scientists have mentored students, supported research and strengthened IITH’s global academic collaborations. At a press event, IIT-H director Prof. B. S. Murty called their election a proud moment. “Their journeys from rural backgrounds to the world’s most respected scientific body show what’s possible when talent meets opportunity,” he said.
