2 Key Maoist Leaders Surrendered Before Rachakonda Police

The surrender of senior Maoist leaders to join the mainstream can be considered a success of the strategies adopted by the Telangana police.

Hyderabad: After being involved in revolutionary movement for 40 years, a senior underground Telangana committee member of CPI Maoist Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), Kakarala Sunitha along with Telangana committee Area Committee Member (ACM) Chennuri Harish surrendered before Rachakonda Police Commissioner G Sudheer Babu here on Thursday.

The surrender of senior Maoist leaders to join the mainstream can be considered a success of the strategies adopted by the Telangana Police.

Sunitha alias Badri alias Lakshmi alias Gurusmriti alias Saroj returned to the mainstream after serving in the CPI (Maoist) for four decades. Telangana police urged all the underground Maoists of Telangana to return to their native villages and take part in the development of Telangana.

Each and every Maoist, who leaves the CPI Maoist movement and joins the mainstream will be provided benefits under the rehabilitation scheme announced by the Telangana government.

Motivated by the various welfare measures extended by the Telangana government, and the support shown towards those who have returned to the mainstream, the duo decided to lead a peaceful life with their families and surrendered before the police.

Sunitha, 62, a resident of Vijayapuri Colony in Vanasthalipuram, joined CPI (ML) People’s War and went underground in 1986. Her father, Kakarala Satyanarayana was an important leader in the Revolutionary Writers Association and Virasam.

Revolutionary writers Varavara Rao and Gaddar used to frequently visit their home. This influence also contributed to her attraction towards the party.

During her work as central organizer in Vijayawada, she came in contact with TLN Chalam alias Goutham alias Sudhakar. Their acquaintance turned into love, and in August 1986, both of them got married.

In 1992, she moved to Nallamala forest, where she worked in the Forest Divisional Committee. She took part in Veligonda and Bhairavakona encounters apart from Pujariguda encounter in Andhra Odisha Border (AOB) and Kutul encounter. On June 5, 2025, she, along with her husband, was involved in Annapuram National Park encounter.

Her husband Chalam died in an exchange of fire in the same incident. From 2006 until present, she worked as a member of the Regional Political School (RePoS) and the Education Departmental Committee (EDC).

Harish alias Ramanna, 35, of Rangaiyapalli village in Bhupalpally district, was working as Mangi–Indravelli Area Committee member. On December 23, 2022, he took part in an encounter at Tekametta in the National Park Area.

He sustained a bullet injury to his right leg in the incident. On June 7, 2025, he participated in an encounter at Irpagutta in the National Park Area. In this incident, key Maoist leader Bhaskar, and three other cadres were killed.
