2 Drug Smugglers Get 10 years RI in Vijayawada

Hyderabad: The Metropolitan Sessions Court in Vijayawada sentenced two persons to rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 10 years along with a fine of Rs.1 lakh in a case related to ganja smuggling.

The ganja is a narcotic drug as per NDPS Act, 1985 and dealing in ganja is a punishable offence under the provisions of the NDPS Act- 1985. Earlier, the sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted a cargo vehicle when it was coming from Eluru and moving towards Hyderabad.

After due process, the officers of DRI seized 1394.32 kgs of ganja, being illicitly transported in the said vehicle.

The DRI officers arrested two persons under the provisions of NDPS Act-1985. After the conclusion of the investigation, the officers of DRI filed a complaint against the accused before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge, Vijayawada.

Based on the complaint filed by DRI, trial proceedings were conducted and the Metropolitan Sessions Judge found both the accused guilty of the offences and sentenced them accordingly.

The court found both the accused guilty of the charges of illicitly transporting huge quantity of ganja by concealing it under wooden logs in furtherance of the well-planned conspiracy, and sentenced both of them, under provisions of Section 20(b)(ii)(C) of NDPS Act to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of 10 years and to pay fine of Rs.1 lakh each.

In default of payment of fine, they must undergo simple imprisonment for a period of three months.
