19-Yr-Old Loses ₹1 L In Bike Scam

When the fraudsters demanded additional ₹8,550 without delivering the bike, Jithender realised he was conned: Reports

HYDERABAD: A 19-year-old private employee from Nadergul was cheated of nearly 1 lakh in an online bike purchase scam.

According to the complaint, Jithender came across an Instagram reel advertising a 2020 KTM Duke 250 for ₹35,000. On clicking the link, he was directed to a WhatsApp number where the namesake seller shared bike details and asked him to contact another number.

Initially, Jithender was told to pay ₹320 as booking charges through Paytm. Over the next few days, the scammers, using multiple numbers, claimed the bike had arrived in Hyderabad and demanded additional payments for delivery. Under various pretexts, they squeezed money in the pretext of various charges including amounts of ₹6,000, ₹10,100, ₹9,999, ₹15,650 and more eventually totalling ₹98,246.

When the fraudsters demanded additional ₹8,550 without delivering the bike, Jithender realised he was conned. He immediately lodged a complaint through the cybercrime helpline 1930, following which the Adibatla police registered a case. Further probe is on.
