14 Medical Students Suspended For Ragging

The inquiry reportedly confirmed incidents of ragging, and video evidence was found in connection with the allegations.

Hyderabad:Kamareddy Government Medical College has suspended 14 second-year MBBS students for allegedly harassing first-year students. Four have been suspended for six months and the remaining 10 for four months, depending on the severity of the allegations.

The incident came to light after junior students lodged an online complaint with the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) anti-ragging cell a week ago. After examining the complaint, NMC officials informed the local police and the college principal, prompting the college to begin an internal inquiry.

“All the students are male. They allegedly interacted with juniors outside the college, as hostels are available outside, and made them sing songs. We received information from the NMC and questioned the college. Since the college took action, no case was registered,” M. Rajesh Chandra, superintendent of police, Kamareddy, told Deccan Chronicle.

The inquiry reportedly confirmed incidents of ragging, and video evidence was found in connection with the allegations.

Dr B. Valya, principal of Government Medical College, Kamareddy, said the 14 students were staying outside the hostel but had entered the hostel where first and final-year students reside. The juniors, frustrated by the trespassing and ragging, complained to the NMC, he said. The college was required to inform the police and had done so.

The heads of various departments held a special meeting on Tuesday to review the findings. Based on the inquiry, the college decided to suspend all 14 students. They include students from Telangana and other states.

Valya said the college had acted in accordance with NMC guidelines and that further inquiry was under way. He warned that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in ragging on campus or in the hostel.

Dr Ramadevi, Academic Director of Medical Education, confirmed the suspension of the 14 second-year students to Deccan Chronicle. She said action had been taken in accordance with NMC norms and that the principal was yet to submit details of the ragging incident.
