135 Wakf Properties Acquired For Metro In Old City

HYDERABAD: As many as 135 Waqf properties along the Dar-ul-Shifa and Chandrayangutta stretch are set to make way for Hyderabad Metro Rail construction in the Old City. Around 45 properties on the left side and 90 on the right are under the land acquisition process.

Around 7,400 square yards belonging to Waqf Board are being acquired for the project. Accordingly, several awards have been passed in favour of the Telangana Waqf Board where the title is clear.

"The compensation cheques will be received after handing over possessions of the properties,” Waqf Board chairman Syed Azmatullah Husseini told Deccan Chronicle.

Unlike the other properties, which are being awarded a compensation of `85,000 per square yard, the Waqf properties are being extended `65,000 per square yard under general award acquisition. In cases of title disputes, compensation amounts have been referred to the Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement Authority Court.

A claim of interest filed by the Waqf Board in respect of Waqf properties is being scrutinised by the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited authorities, Husseini said.

All the paperwork for acquiring the Waqf properties has been completed. Demolition works are being carried out without affecting religious places, under supervision of the Waqf Board officials.

Tenants have received the rehabilitation amount for their shops, houses, while the land and structure amount will be paid to the Waqf Board, officials said.

Waqf Board member Abdul Fateh Syed Bandagi Badesha said the compensation amount could only be used for the development of the institution or purchasing alternative land. He opined that the government should give the land-to-land compensation in interest of Waqf properties rather than passing an award and paying compensation to the Waqf board.

The state government has taken up the 7.5 km Hyderabad Metro Rail corridor from MGBS to Chandrayangutta via Dar-ul-Shifa and Shalibanda junction. Over 100 structures of religious importance, heritage and sensitive structures have been kept intact.
