Chennai: A woman who went to work as a housemaid in Kuwait was tortured for the last ten months and was brought back by an NGO following her appeals through social media.

The woman, Prema (35), who addressed the media at the Chennai airport, said she was asked to work for 20 hours and was not paid a salary for the last two months. She went through the agents from Kumbakonam and the agents did not pay the salary fixed by the agents from the beginning. When she wanted to return to India, she was locked in a room without food and water.

The agents also demanded Rs. 2 lakh if she wanted to return and threatened that she would be forced to die of hunger if she did not work. Prema said she had two female children, and she went to work to Kuwait through agents in Kallakurichi due to her family situation.

After the continuous torture, she spoke in a video about her situation and posted it on social media. Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Trust, an NGO, rescued her from Kuwait. She was taken to Oman from Kuwait and brought in on an Oman Air flight to Chennai.

The members of the NGO group welcomed her and sent her back to her home at Kumbakonam. Prema said she worked in three houses, and the agents confined her to a room for the last two months. They ill-treated her and did not give her food or water. Four other women belonging to Kerala and Andhra Pradesh were in a similar condition, and they informed the local police who did not take any action. The NGO group released two women, and Prema is the third, she said, and appealed to the people not to trust agents and go to work in foreign countries.
