VOC Port Poised to Become Key Node in India’s Green Maritime Shift

Thoothukudi: The V.O. Chidambaranar Port is being positioned as a potential green shipping corridor node on the India-Europe trade route, with its growing green fuel infrastructure offering significant opportunities to support maritime decarbonisation, said V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) chairperson Sushant Kumar Purohit.

Referring to a policy brief released by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) at the India Clean Transportation Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Mr Purohit said the assessment, titled “Positioning V.O. Chidambaranar Port for maritime decarbonisation”, had identified the port’s potential to expand green fuel offtake and bunkering, connect with the European Union-linked shipping operators and forge partnerships with international ports.
The VOC Port, designated as a Green Hydrogen Hub under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, was the first Indian port to produce green hydrogen. It has a 10 Nm³/hr green hydrogen pilot project and is nearing completion of two 750 cubic metre green methanol storage facilities. A dedicated green ammonia berth is also under development.
Mr Purohit said the port was extending shore to ship power facilities to all berths and was pursuing projects involving green tugs, a 3 MW green hydrogen plant, solar and wind power generation and a 5 MWh battery energy storage system.
About 501 acres have been allotted to green fuel developers, involving proposed investments of around Rs 41,860 crore. The port handled around 1.45 lakh tonnes of liquid ammonia in 2024-25.
Mr Purohit said the ICCT assessment would provide strategic direction for linking clean fuel production at the VOC Port with emerging maritime demand and green shipping networks, particularly along the India-Europe trade corridor
