Chennai: The Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly appears to be producing an unlikely television hit, with live telecasts of House proceedings drawing viewers who would normally spend their time watching serials, reality shows, other programmes and films.
Television channels carrying live or extended coverage of the Assembly proceedings are seeing increased viewership as political debates and sharp exchanges become television viewing. Online channels streaming the proceedings are also attracting more viewers, likes, comments and shares, indicating that interest is extending beyond conventional political audiences.
The change is particularly noticeable in households where Assembly debates were earlier not part of the viewing routine. Families, including women, children and younger viewers, are increasingly watching together. For many, the attraction is less about legislative procedure and more about the personalities, arguments and dramatic exchanges unfolding on the Assembly floor.

P Suganthy of Cuddalore says ''I never used to watch TV with my mother-in-law in the past. But now we watch TV together with our children. Assembly debate has been interesting since TVK assumed office.”
The new political composition of the House has also added to the interest. The 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has a strong TVK presence, with the party emerging as the largest political formation after the 2026 election.
The proceedings are also generating a second wave of attention on social media. Clips of heated exchanges, sharp political remarks and memorable statements are being turned into short videos, reels and memes. A speech lasting several minutes inside the House can be reduced to a 30-second clip and circulated across platforms within minutes.
For news channels, the live feed has become a valuable source of content. This creates a cycle in which a live speech generates television coverage, which then produces digital clips and social-media conversations.
The government has projected greater live access to Assembly proceedings as part of its transparency agenda. The broadcasts allow citizens to watch debates directly instead of relying on selected excerpts.
The growing audience suggests that Assembly proceedings have acquired a new kind of public appeal. Politics is increasingly being consumed in the same digital environment as entertainment: watched live, clipped, shared, commented upon and discussed.
For television channels and online platforms, the message is clear: live Assembly coverage is no longer niche political programming. It is emerging as a mainstream viewing habit — bringing the House directly into Tamil Nadu homes and turning legislative debate into a prime-time attraction.
