TVK, TNCC Opposes Delimitation Bill

Vijay said that while his party supported the bill providing 33% reservation for women, which was to be taken up for discussion and passed in Parliament.

Chennai: Besides the DMK that has declared a war against the Union BJP government for the proposed constituency delimitation to be brought in through an amendment to the Constitution, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Vijay, and the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) have expressed opposition to the move.

Vijay, in his message on Wednesday, said it was the union government's discriminatory action that aimed to increase the seats in Lok Sabha from 543 to 850 through the 'Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026' that would be taken for discussion in the House on April 16.

Vijay said that while his party supported the bill providing 33% reservation for women, which was to be taken up for discussion and passed in Parliament, if the Constitution Bill was passed, the proportional disparity between the representation of southern and northern states will increase significantly.

If that happened, the representation of southern would decrease in matters such as enacting laws related to language, culture, and state rights, as well as formulating the Union Government's policies, which would lead to the demands of the people of southern states, particularly the voice of the people of Tamil Nadu, who had fully adhered to the Union Government's announcements, would go unheard in Parliament.

The passage of Bill appeared to impose a "punishment" on a state that has adhered to the Union Government's announcement for generations, while offering a "reward" to states that have not followed it, he said, adding that it could also impact financial allocations.

TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, in a statement, said that the constituency delimitation was an exercise that would lead to the concentration of power at one point and was against democracy.

He conveyed his support to the agitation against the Bill called for Thursday by the DMK and said that it would wake up the conscience of the people and become a democratic protest. He urged Congress workers to hoist black flag in their houses and don black dress. It would be the beginning for the protection of the voice of democracy, he said.
