Tamil Nadu 2026 Results Explained: Coalition Options Before Vijay’s TVK
In the 234-member Assembly, TVK has won 108 seats - 10 short of the 118 needed to form the government

Chennai: The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election has delivered a surprise verdict, with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, emerging as the single-largest party. However, the party has fallen short of the majority mark, leaving the state headed for a crucial political phase.
In the 234-member Assembly, TVK has won 108 seats - 10 short of the 118 needed to form the government. Since Vijay has won from two constituencies, he will have to vacate one, bringing the effective strength down to 107. Even with a bypoll reducing the majority mark to 117, TVK will still need support from at least 10 more MLAs.
With no party crossing the majority mark, several scenarios are now being discussed.
Scenario 1: TVK reaches out to smaller parties
One possible route for TVK is to seek support from smaller parties currently aligned with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). These include the Congress and Left parties, which together have enough numbers to help TVK cross the majority mark.
If sections of these parties decide to support Vijay, TVK could form the government. However, such a move may have wider implications for opposition unity at the national level.
Scenario 2: DMK alliance extends support
Another possibility is the entire DMK-led alliance offering outside support to TVK. This would make government formation smoother and could also strengthen opposition coordination nationally.
However, this scenario faces political challenges. Vijay has repeatedly positioned TVK as a rival to the DMK, and it remains unclear whether both sides are willing to work together.
Scenario 3: AIADMK’s role
Support from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) is another theoretical option. But early signals suggest this is unlikely.
AIADMK leaders have publicly ruled out an alliance with TVK. Moreover, TVK has taken a strong stance against the BJP, which is aligned with AIADMK as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Any understanding between TVK and AIADMK would require major political shifts.
A wait-and-watch situation
For now, Tamil Nadu is headed into a phase of negotiations and political calculations. As the single-largest party, TVK has the first opportunity to stake claim to form the government. Whether Vijay can gather the numbers needed will depend on how discussions with other parties unfold in the coming days.
The 2026 verdict marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu politics, breaking the long-standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK. What happens next will not only decide the state’s next government but could also reshape political equations beyond Tamil Nadu.
