Torrential Rains Inundate Puducherry as Depression Prevails
The rapid downpour overwhelmed local drainage systems, causing primary canals — including the Periya Vaikkal, Uppanar, and Vellavari — to overflow

Puducherry: Relentless heavy downpours lashed the Union Territory of Puducherry on Sunday, flooding residential neighbourhoods, paralysing road traffic, and disrupting normal life across the coastal town.
The sudden deluge follows the onset of the northeast monsoon on Oct. 15, further intensified by a depression prevailing over the Bay of Bengal. According to the IMD, the system is expected to intensify into Cyclonic Storm 'Arnab' over westcentral Bay of Bengal before making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam.
In response to the alert, distant cautionary signal No. 1 has been hoisted at the Puducherry port. Rainfall battered the region non-stop from the early hours of the morning until around 11:00 am with Puducherr recording 9.7 cm of rainfall between 5:30 pm Saturday and 8:30 am Sunday, followed by an intense burst of nearly 10 cm in just three hours.
The rapid downpour overwhelmed local drainage systems, causing primary canals — including the Periya Vaikkal, Uppanar, and Vellavari — to overflow. Stormwater inundated low-lying residential areas such as Krishna Nagar and Rainbow Nagar, entering several houses and stranding residents indoors.
