TN Scientist Elected to Head Global Fishery Network
Dr P. Krishnan, a fisheries scientist will now chair the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats' Network (RSN) for 2026-28
Chennai: Dr P. Krishnan, a fisheries scientist from Tamil Nadu and Director of the Chennai-based Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO), has been elected Chair of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats' Network (RSN) for 2026-28.
He was elected on the sidelines of the 37th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) Committee on Fisheries (COFI) in Rome.
The RSN brings together the secretariats of more than 50 regional fishery bodies worldwide and serves as an important platform for coordination on global fisheries governance, including small-scale fisheries, climate adaptation and implementation of the recently adopted High Seas Biodiversity Agreement (BBNJ).
The development comes as India has emerged as the first among four South Asian countries to complete the groundwork for a national plan aimed at protecting and supporting small-scale fishers.
Dr Krishnan's election is seen as a recognition of India's growing role in global fisheries governance and Chennai's contribution to international fisheries cooperation through the BOBP-IGO.
