TN Govt Issues GO On TAPS

The GO, dated January 9, said that the government had introduced the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and continued it even after the Union Government brought in the National Pension Scheme at the all-India level

Chennai: A government order implementing the Tamil Nadu Assured Pension Scheme (TAPS) has been issued, saying that the scheme would come into force from January 1.

The GO, dated January 9, said that the government had introduced the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) and continued it even after the Union Government brought in the National Pension Scheme at the all-India level.

In 2025 after the Union Government introduced the Integrated Pension Scheme, a committee under Additional Chief Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi was formed to study the Contributory Pension Scheme, the Old Pension Scheme and the Integrated Pension Scheme and recommend a pension scheme for State government employees, the GO said.

The committee submitted its report on December 30, 2025, and based on it the TAPS was announced as the pension scheme for Government employees, who would get 50 per cent of the last drawn salary as pension. They would have to, however, contribute 10 per cent of their salary towards the pension fund.

TAPS will be mandatory for all those who join government service on January 1, 2026, and later, the GO said, adding that those retiring after that date would also come under its purview.
