TN Govt Conducts Community Baby Shower For 100 Women

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Rural Development and Water Resources Minister N. Anand participated in a community valaikappu (baby shower) ceremony for 100 pregnant women on Friday at the Sir Pitti Thyagaraya Hall in T. Nagar, Chennai, organised by the Department of Social Welfare and Women’s Rights and the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS).
The minister adorned the women with bangles, performed the traditional nalangu ritual and presented them with gifts.
Anand said that under the guidance of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and through the ICDS scheme, traditional baby shower ceremonies were being conducted for 43,700 pregnant women — comprising 100 women from each of the 437 blocks across the state — at a total cost of ₹1,09,25,000.
The ceremony is being organised for 800 beneficiaries across eight schemes in the South Chennai district, with 100 beneficiaries participating in each scheme. The inaugural event was held for 100 beneficiaries from the T. Nagar Assembly constituency.
Funds amounting to ₹2 lakh — calculated at the rate of ₹25,000 per scheme — have been allocated for the South Chennai district to conduct these ceremonies, explained Anand.
The primary objective of the event is to enable expectant mothers to experience the joy of the valaikappu ceremony while simultaneously gaining awareness regarding health and nutrition, explained the minister.
For the Government of Tamil Nadu, the advancement and safety of women are not merely promises; they are core principles, said Anand.
This community baby shower stands as a special event that brings together our traditions, the magnificence of motherhood, and the government’s commitment to welfare. I pray to the Almighty for good health, happiness, and a prosperous future for you and the child growing within you, added the minister.
