TN: Flying Squad Seizes Van Carrying ₹2.07 Crore Gold Jewellery, Silver Articles To Shops

Jayankondam: A flying squad seized Rs. 2.07 crore worth gold jewellery and silver articles along with the van which came from Chennai to supply to local jewellery shops at Jayankondam, Thursday night.
Official sources said the van was parked near a popular jewellery mart at Jayankondam and the flying squad, which was passing by, made enquiries with the driver and other occupants of the vehicle.
They told the officials that they had come from Chennai for supplying gold jewellery and silver articles to the local jewellery shops.
The flying squad officials verified the documents they were carrying and calculated that there were 177 sovereigns of gold ornaments, and 5,390 kg of silver articles.
Though the documents correctly mentioned the valuables, the number of the van and the vehicle number mentioned in the goods invoice were different.
Following this, the flying squad alerted the Income-Tax officials who arrived at the spot. They inspected the valuables and the van, after which the revenue authorities seized the van and the valuables.
The Income-Tax officials asked the van in-charge to produce proper documents to claim the valuables and the van which will be with the treasury at the RDO office in Udayarpalayam, the sources added.
