Salem: A gas leak at a private sago factory near Attur in Tamil Nadu affected 12 people, who were admitted to a private hospital in Attur for treatment. As per reports, fire and rescue personnel brought the leak under control after battling the blaze for nearly three hours. Firefighters worked for nearly three hours to control both the fire and the gas leak.
The factory is owned by Dharmalingam, a resident of Sadasivam village near Thalaivasal in Salem district. At the time of the incident, around 11 workers were engaged in producing sago and starch.
A short circuit reportedly triggered a fire, which first spread to nearby gunny bags and later to stacked sago sacks.
The flames then reached around 15 sacks of chlorine powder stored nearby. While attempting to extinguish the fire, workers poured water on the chlorine powder sacks. The resulting chemical reaction, combined with smoke from the blaze, led to the release of toxic gas.
Several workers developed breathing difficulties and respiratory problems after inhaling the smoke and gas, while six reportedly fainted at the spot. They were immediately taken to a private hospital in Attur. Revenue officials, led by Attur RDO Tamilmani, have begun an inquiry into the incident. Attur rural police have also launched an investigation.
