TN Environmentalists Desilt 60 Canals in 15 Villages of Thiruthuraipoondi Taluk

Tiruvarur: The environmental activists belonging to the Tiruvarur district unit of Exnora and the Needamangalam-based Green Needa have desilted 207.50 km distance of 60 canals in 15 villages in and around Thiruthuraipoondi taluk in Tiruvarur district. They were assisted by Hyundai Mobis and Posco companies who provided rent-free earth movers with driver's wages.
S. Senthur Pari, president of the Tiruvarur Exnora and chief coordinator of Green Needa, said as per the guidelines of water resources and revenue departments they completed the task and will hand over the desilted canals to the district administration.
They said if they went along by the norms of the agricultural engineering and water resources departments, they would have had to spend Rs 2 lakh and Rs 40,000 per km of canal, but with the help provided by Hyundai Mobis and Posco, only Rs 7000 to 12,000 was spent per km.
Tiruvarur Collector V. Mohanachandran will inaugurate the palm seed bank at Thiruvizhimizhalai near Tiruvarur on September 24 and planting one crore palm seeds across the district.
