Tamil Nadu: Two UP Men Arrested For Blocking, Stealing Money From ATMs

Chennai: Two persons from Uttar Pradesh were arrested for sticking plastic tape at the opening layer of the ATMs through which money is dispensed. The accused used to remove the tape and take money from the tray after the customer leaves thinking that money is not despatched.
A complaint was given by Moses (24), the executive supervisor of a company managing the ATMs in the city. In his complaint, Moses said a bank employee called him and said money was stolen from a State Bank of India ATM by putting a plastic tape on the machine’s money dispensing counter. The complaint given by Moses was registered by the Vyasarpadi police.
After examining the CCTV footage, the police arrested the accused, identified as Veerbahadur (23) and Amar Singh (30) from Uttar Pradesh. The police also seized Rs 16,300 cash, 2 mobile phones, a screwdriver and plastic tapes from them.
The investigation showed that the duo had carried out similar thefts in ATMs at Vyasarpadi, Madhavaram and Moolakadai. After putting up the plastic tape, they would stand outside and watch the activities in the ATM. When a customer tries to draw money, it will be stuck in the plastic tape and will not come out. After the customers leave the ATM, the accused would remove the tape and steal the money left in the tray.
