CHENNAI: With rains and the consequent release of Cauvery water from Karnataka dams dampening the DMK protests against ‘the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam’s complacency’ on the Cauvery issue under Opposition leader Udhayanidhi Stalin in Thanjavur on Monday, TNCC president Manickam Tagore on Sunday said parties in Tamil Nadu are putting politics above water.
CPI-M State secretary P. Shanmugam asked how the dams in Karnataka, which had asserted that its dams did not have sufficient water for release to Tamil Nadu, suddenly filled up due to rains in two days. He also questioned the way in which the Cauvery Water Monitoring Committee monitored the dams in Karnataka. PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said Karnataka letting out surplus water clearly proved that no water would be given to Tamil Nadu if the Mekedatu dam is constructed.
Addressing the media at the Sathyamurthy Bhavan in the city, Manickam Tagore said all the parties in Karnataka are united on the Cauvery issue but parties in Tamil Nadu are blaming each other. Even while the statements of DMK president M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi Stalin announcing the protests hit out only at the TVK and did not condemn the Karnataka government, Tagore said the party should fight against the Karnataka government instead of blaming each other.
He said Tamil Nadu had not spoken in one voice and pointed out that the Assembly resolution was passed in the presence of all the parties. The amendment brought by the Opposition leader was accepted and included in the resolution, he pointed out.
“As far as Tamil Nadu is concerned, inner fighting among parties has become more important, the Congress MP said. The partiers did not think that Tamil Nadu getting water is important, but they give importance to party politics, he charged.

PMK president Anbumani Ramadoss said Karnataka releasing only surplus water from Kabini dam which had reached full capacity only proved that Tamil Nadu would not get Cauvery water if the Mekedatu dam is constructed. Since the Kabini dam has reached 94 per cent of its total capacity and it could not hold water without danger to the structure, the Karnataka government is releasing water to Tamil Nadu. He said Karnataka uses Tamil Nadu only as an outlet and it is not ready to provide the legal share of water to Tamil Nadu.
