Chennai: Tamil Nadu Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin presented a book to Chief Minister Joseph Vijay when the latter paid a courtesy call to his predecessor, M.K. Stalin, at their Alwarpet residence after assuming office. This was the first meeting between Vijay and M.K. Stalin since Vijay took office. M.K. Stalin and Udhayanidhi accorded a warm welcome to the Chief Minister. Udhayanidhi greeted Vijay with a handshake and a warm embrace on his arrival. Later, M.K. Stalin also hugged Vijay, and the leaders honoured each other with silk shawls and bouquets.
The book in question drew attention after visuals of the meeting surfaced. Titled ‘Kaalathin Niram Sivappu Karuppu’, translated as ‘The Colour of the Times is Black and Red’, is a 1,120-page compilation which chronicles 75 years of DMK history and ideology, its impact. It also features essays from over 80 national leaders, including Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, Lalu Prasad, Sharad Pawar, CPI leader D Raja, and Farooq Abdullah, writers, and researchers. The book was released by M.K. Stalin in November 2025. At the time, he claimed that the DMK has charted the progressive trajectory of national politics, extending its influence far beyond Tamil Nadu.
Interestingly, during the launch of the book, then-CM and DMK president M.K. Stalin slammed the BJP and actor Vijay’s TVK party, stating that those unaware of the DMK’s ideological strength and sacrifices were trying to intimidate the party, while “ignoramuses” daydreamed of replicating its success.
Taking an indirect dig at Vijay, Stalin said winning like the DMK requires toiling and knowledge like the DMK. He added that the DMK didn’t come to power by merely announcing a party and a CM ambition. It grew over 18 years, facing challenges, with leaders and cadres sacrificing for years, he stated.
However, in a stunning political debut for a two-year-old party formed by actor Vijay, the TVK party secured a remarkable victory, beating two formidable Dravidian parties, the DMK and AIADMK, while marking a generational shift in voter preferences in the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections.
