Tamil Nadu: English Literature Graduate Held For Stealing iPhone From Women’s Hostel

Chennai: A 26-year-old woman was arrested by the Chromepet police for stealing a high-end iPhone from a women’s hostel in New Colony, Chromepet.

The woman, identified as Santhoshini, 26, of Madurai, was caught by the hostel residents when she returned to the premises on Tuesday.

According to the police, several working women stay at the hostel in New Colony. Two days ago, an expensive iPhone, belonging to one of the residents, went missing from the hostel. Following the theft, the hostel management lodged a complaint with the Chromepet police.

Around the same time, a young woman had visited the hostel claiming that she was looking for a job. After she left, some of the residents reportedly suspected that she could have been involved in the theft.

On Tuesday, the same woman returned to the hostel and again enquired about employment. She also interacted with the residents for some time. Suspicious of her presence, the women questioned her and allegedly discovered that she was the same person suspected of stealing the iPhone earlier.

The residents then detained her and handed her over to the Chromepet police.

During interrogation, police identified her as Santhoshini, an English Literature graduate from Madurai. Police said she had been staying with her brother in Velachery a few months ago and was involved in a dispute with her sister-in-law, during which she allegedly assaulted her.

Following the incident, a case was registered against Santhoshini by the Velachery police and she was produced before a court and was subsequently released on bail.

The incident has caused a stir in the Chromepet area, particularly as the accused is an English Literature graduate who allegedly turned to mobile phone theft.
