CHENNAI: Reviewing the security situation in various prisons of the State, close on the heels of a spate of jailbreaks, particularly the escape of 17 prisoners from Theni district jail, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay constituted a high-level committee headed by retired IPS officer J K Tripathy to closely analyse the present position and come up with recommendations to strengthen the security system in jails.
The Chief Minister formed the committee under Tripathy based on the inputs received when he personally reviewed the prison security situation on Monday. He also ordered the constitution of a High-Level Committee to conduct a detailed enquiry into the security lapses that led to the recent incidents of escape of prisoners in Tamil Nadu.
To prevent future jailbreaks, Vijay wanted the measures recommended to strengthen the security of prisons in the State to be based on best practices and measures followed elsewhere in the country and abroad and directed that prison security be made fool proof on a war footing. He wanted accountability to be fixed for any negligence in duty.
Apart from Tripathy, who will be the chairman of the committee, K Shankar, Additional Director General of Police / Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services and S Rajendran, former Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, will be members.
The High-Level committee would conduct a detailed enquiry into the security lapses that led to the recent jailbreaks, examine the existing security architecture, standard operating procedures, technology gaps and manpower deployment and recommend comprehensive measures to strengthen the security of prisons.
The Committee will submit its report with the recommendations to the Government at the earliest.
