CHENNAI: The rabble-rousing speech of Chief Minister and TVK president C Joseph Vijay on Friday at the Madurantakam Assembly constituency opened the floodgates for an acrimonious campaign for the by-elections a several leaders of other parties are scheduled to visit the constituencies in the coming days and seek votes for the DMK and AIADMK candidates.
While Vijay continued his usual trope of attacking the DMK while seeking support for his party candidate K Maragatham Kumaravel, the crowds, restricted to 5000 through the issue of QR code passes, went berserk encouraging the TVK to perhaps adapt the same style of campaign in Dharapuram also, the opposition parties lined up their leaders to reach out to the voters.

For Palaniswami, wresting the seat is a prestige issue as Maragatham Kumravel, whose resignation soon after winning the seat necessitated the by-election, actually contested as a AIADMK candidate in May.
The DMK is unleashing its top honchos into the campaign scene with the leader of the opposition Udhayanidi Stalin going around the constituency in a van on Sunday, September 27, from 4 pm onwards and seeking the people’s support to their candidate E Paranthaman.
Udhayanidhi Stalin would be addressing people in places like Madurantakam, Achirapakkam, Orathi, Karunkuzhi and Mammandur, while Premalatha Vijayakanth will be delivering a speech at Elappakkam, where a public meeting has been announced by the DMK-led front.
DMK deputy general secretary Kanimozhi Rajathi Karunanidhi is also scheduled to campaign in different places like Karunkulam from 4 pm and 8 pm and also address a women’s meeting at Perunkandigair at 7 pm.
With Vijay setting the tone for the campaign with his inflammatory speech, the rest of meetings and speeches by the various leaders in the opposition camp are likely to be incendiary, too.
Meanwhile the Indian National League, led by State President Alhaj Ahmed, has thrown its weight behind the DMK-led alliance. The IUML, which contested the general elections as a DMK ally, has already crossed over to the TVK camp and has even found a berth in the Cabinet.
