Tamil Nadu: Assembly session advanced due to by-election

Cuthbert, representing the Congress, will be to attend the session that is expected to go on for over three weeks as the Government has a slew of announcements to make on new policies and welfare schemes with less than two years left for the next Assembly elections

Chennai: The next session of the State Legislative Assembly had been advanced to meet on Thursday, June 20, four days ahead of earlier schedule, in view of the coming by-election to the Vikravandi Assembly constituency, slated for July 10, Assembly Speaker M Appavu announced in Tirunelveli on Tuesday.

A notification issued by Assembly Secretary K Seenivasan said that the House would meet at 10 am on June 20 at the Assembly Hall inside the Secretariat. The Business Advisory Committee is expected to meet and draw the agenda for the session on Tuesday when the newly elected member of the House from Vilavancode constituency, Tharahai Cuthbert, will take oath of office.

The by-election, caused by the resignation of Vijayadharini, former Congress MLA from Vilavancode in Kanyakumari district, after she switched over to the BJP, was held along with the Lok Sabha polls on April 19 and the results were announced on June 4.

According to sources, Chief Minister M K Stalin will be coming up with announcements under Rule 110 and the House may also move several Bills aimed at launching welfare projects for the people.
