CHENNAI: The stage is set for Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to hoist the national flag at the ramparts of the historic Fort St George at 8.45 am on Saturday on the occasion of the 80th Independence Day celebrations and deliver his Independence Day address, besides giving away a few awards, including Police medals, while the customary tea party at the Lok Bhavan will not be held as Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar will be away at Thiruvananthapuram.
Arlekar, who is the Governor of Kerala and holds additional charge of Tamil Nadu, in his Independence message, called upon the people, particularly the youth to dedicate themselves to nation building and to work with determination towards creating a better, stronger and more prosperous India for future generations.
Since the Governor would be presiding over the celebrations in the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Bhavan, he would not be hosting the annual tea party in Chennai Lok Bhavan on Saturday.
In his first Independence Day celebration as Chief Minister, Vijay has announced 15 medals for police officials. The Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Excellence in Investigation will be given away for 10 police officials, eight of them women, and five other officials, including 2 IPS officers, have been named for the Police Medal for Excellence in Public Service.
Other awards like the Thagaisal Tamilar Award, Dr A P J Abdul Kalam Award, Kalpana Chawla Award for Courage and Daring Enterprise, Chief Minister’s Best Practices Award, Avvaiyar Award and State Youth Award will also be presented by Vijay at the event in Fort St George.

The police officers chosen for the award for excellence in investigation are C Jaishree, N Tamilarasi, K Alaaguraj, N Thanshiya, S Latha, V Gomathi, M Chithra, R Vinatha, G Mahalakshmi and S Vijayakumar and those named for the medal for excellence in public service are V Sasi Mohan, D Shanmuga Priya (both IPS officers), C M R Manimozhiyan, K Madan Kumar and M Ravikumar.
The recipients of the award will be given a gold medal weighing 8 grams and a cash reward of Rs 25,000 each.
Security has been increased in Chennai and particularly around Fort St George as the police expect a huge crowd to turn up to watch the Chief Minister hoisting the tricolor at the ramparts and also delivering his address.
