Tamil Nadu: 3 From Kovai Among 6 Held For Poaching Deer In Nilgiris

OOTY: Foresters nabbed six persons for doing away with a sambar deer in Kotagiri limits, near here. According to the foresters at the Kattabettu forest range in the Nilgiris forest division, acting on specific information, they nabbed the offenders – Velu (36), Soorya (32) and Manikkam (36), all hailing from Karamadai limits in Coimbatore district, and Senthilkumar (46), Viswanathan (38), Chinnadurai (42) from Kanakambi hamlet limits in the Bikipathimund village limits, near Kattabettu, for poaching a sambar deer on Monday.
After enquiry, the foresters seized a country-made gun, a knife and the skin of the deer from the offenders. It is said the arrested persons worked as a unit to gun down sambar deer to extract its meat.
While this looks like another poaching incident in the jungle limits of Kotagiri, wildlife activists here pointed that a group from Karamadai limits joining with the local accomplices made one suspect that there had been an understanding between the locals and outsiders to kill the sambar deer for its meat either for personal use or to sell in other places.

The foresters should step up jungle patrolling limits in the remote areas, besides keeping a watch on the movement of suspicious elements in the jungle peripheries, green activists here stated.
