Solve Our Pay Scale Anomalies, Rural Development Engineers Tell Ministers

The engineers are demanding the restoration of rightful grade pays — Rs 5,100 for assistant engineers, Rs 6,600 for assistant executive engineers, and Rs 7,600 for executive engineers

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Rural Development Engineers Association (TNRDEA) has submitted a petition to key state ministers, seeking urgent intervention to solve long-standing pay scale anomalies that affect roughly 1,500 engineers across the state.

Addressed to the ministers of public works, finance, and school education, the petition highlights that rural development engineers have faced recurring monthly salary losses between ?10,000 and ?15,000 since 2017 due to unrectified wage discrepancies.

TNRDEA general secretary SSS. Piragalathan stated that fair pay scales originally sanctioned in 2010 under the 6th Pay Commission were arbitrarily slashed via subsequent government orders, including GO 71 and GO 404.

The association has urged the state government to honour the Madras High Court judgment dated April 4, 2024, which directed the constitution of a new Pay Grievance Redressal Committee headed by a retired judge to establish a permanent solution.

The engineers are demanding the restoration of rightful grade pays — Rs 5,100 for assistant engineers, Rs 6,600 for assistant executive engineers, and Rs 7,600 for executive engineers—along with an immediate end to treasury-level salary withholding on promotions and the initiation of direct talks with finance officials.
