SIR Causes A Stir In Tamil Nadu

‘We will resist disenfranchisement and defeat Vote Theft’ Chief Minister M K Stalin said in a message on X": Reports

CHENNAI: The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, announced by the Election Commission of India, has created a stir in the State with the ruling coalition, led by the DMK, seeing in it a ploy by the ruling BJP at the Centre to rob citizens of their rights and the AIADMK describing the apprehension as one stemming out of a fear of losing the next Assembly elections in 2026.

The DMK that held a meeting of its alliance party leaders on Monday, announced an all-party meeting to discuss SIR and appropriate decision, while the ECI, too, convened an all-party meeting on October 29, 4 pm.

‘We will resist disenfranchisement and defeat Vote Theft’ Chief Minister M K Stalin said in a message on X.

To carry out Special Intensive Revision just months before the election and especially during the monsoon months of November and December, brought serious practical difficulties, he said, adding that to conduct SIR in a hasty and opaque manner was nothing but a conspiracy by the ECI to rob citizens of their rights and help the BJP.

He said large numbers of women, minorities and people from SC and ST communities were removed from the electoral rolls in Bihar and the absence of transparency had fuelled serious suspicion in the public mind about it.

‘The right to vote is the foundation of democracy. Tamil Nadu will fight against any attempt to murder it, and Tamil Nadu will win, he said.

The meeting of the alliance parties, which was called by the DMK for Monday on short notice, saw most of the parties taking part in it and decided to call for the all-party meeting at 10 am on November 2 at Hotel Accord in T Nagar.

AIADMK organizational secretary D Jayakumar supported the Union Government’ move to go for SIR, which he said was essential for protecting democracy. Welcoming SIR, Jayakumar said summary revision and intensive revision of electoral rolls were regular practices and would help remove anomalies.

The present electoral roll in the State was not 100 percent perfect, he said, adding that the AIADMK had appealed to the ECI to make the necessary corrections to it.
