Seruthur Fishermen Call Off Protest After Assurances On Lodge Wastewater

About 3,000 fishermen had stayed off the sea for six days over drainage discharge from private lodges into Vellaiyar river.

A major road roko agitation by the fishermen of Seruthur hamlet in Nagapattinam district on Sunday in protest against drainage water from private lodges at Velankanni flowing into Vellaiyar river was given up following assurances given by revenue and police officials during negotiations.

About 3,000 fishermen of Seruthur did not venture into the sea for the sixth day and planned to stage a demonstration against the authorities of the Velankanni town panchayat and the police.
Nagapattinam RDO Sankaranarayanan held negotiations with the fishermen and decided to meet the executive officer and the president Velankanni town panchayat on September 15 to make a permanent solution within three months. Besides, the health authorities were asked to inspect the lodging houses to prevent the drainage flowing into Vellaiyar river. Police will expedite their action in this regard.
