Rs. 254 crore For Drainage Project In Tambaram, Chromepet And Thiruneermalai

Chennai: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay who is also the minister for municipal administration, on Monday announced the ‘Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission (CMIUDM) for stable urban growth, improvement of people’s quality life and to create urban services to suit the future population and economic growth.
Education minister Rajmohan read out the Chief Minister’s announcements in the Assembly during the reply to the discussion on demands for grants to the municipal administration department. The Chief Minister said the urban services would be people-centric, transparent and smooth. The mission would plan the services to provide safe drinking water, drainage system, solid waste management and safe roads suitable for the use of people.
The mission would plan smooth vehicular traffic, sustained urban greenery, restoration of water bodies, improvement of standards of urban living and a healthy environment, Joseph Vijay said. He also announced the renovation of the drainage scheme for Pallavaram and Chromepet and Thiruneermalai at an estimated budget of Rs. 254 crore.
He noted that drinking water is provided round the clock in 58 wards of Coimbatore and a detailed project report would be prepared to expand the scheme to the remaining 42 wards. The Chief Minister also announced detailed project reports to implement an integrated drinking water scheme for Tenkasi district, 286 residential places in Kanyakumari district and Srivilliputhur municipality.
The biogas generated from the sewage treatment plants of the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board would be used to prepare compressed bio gas which would be sold. He announced drainage projects for the remaining areas of Coimbatore, Sivakasi corporation and Tiruchendur municipality.
Joseph Vijay announced the renovation of Tiruvottiyur sewage treatment plant under the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor technology at a cost of Rs. 42 crore. Modern machinery would be bought at an estimate of Rs. 102 crore for the maintenance of drainages in corporations and municipalities.
The Chief Minister announced sewage treatment plants in 15 town panchayats to prevent the discharge of sewage into rivers and streams besides the removal of 29 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi dump yards through bio mining. Legacy waste in the garbage yards of Avadi, Tambaram and Coimbatore corporations and 25 municipalities would also be removed through bio mining in a budget of Rs. 93 crore, he said, adding one lakh LED lights would be installed in local bodies.
Storm water drainage would be built along the Jawaharlal Nehru road from Otteri Nullah canal zero point to the river Cooum to drain the water from Villivakkam, Ambattur, Korattur, Padi and Anna Nagar. He announced allocation of Rs. 118 crore for storm water drainages in Cuddalore, Thoothukudi, Kanyakumari and Nagapattinam which are flood prone. He announced a programme at an expense of Rs. 107 crore to catch street dogs and sterilise them as a measure to prevent rabies.
