Premalatha Sour Over Acrimony in Tamil Nadu Assembly
Claiming that she was not given an opportunity to address the Assembly, she said that she had met the Speaker and appraised him about the way the proceedings in the House were going down the hill
Chennai: Expressing her frustration over the deterioration of the quality of debates in the State Assembly, DMDK general secretary Premalatha urged the TVK government to give up its penchant to fight incessantly in the House and make proper use of the opportunity that it had been given to them, to serve the people, in a better way.
Speaking to the media outside the Assembly on Thursday, Premalatha claimed that all members were not getting equal opportunities to express their views and whenever PWD Minister Aadhav Arjuna rose to spoke hell broke loose in the House and the fight continued for at least four hours with the Assembly unable to transact any other business.
The proceeding in the Assembly that were hitherto interesting to watch now present a picture of a battle field and it was highly unfair on the part of members to turn the proceedings in the House to massage their personal egos as people’s money was being spent to organize the Assembly sessions, he said
Claiming that she was not given an opportunity to address the Assembly, she said that she had met the Speaker and appraised him about the way the proceedings in the House were going down the hill. Most of the time, the Assembly is gripped by an acrimonious exchange between 12 noon and 2 pm.
Giving an example on how the time was wasted in the Assembly, she said that when the debate on the grants for the Social Justice department was proceeding, a TVK member raised a question as to what good the DMK had done for Dalits, which created a flutter and derailed the debate.
Though every member came to the House fully prepared for the discussions, mastering the data and details relating to every issue, the total time the Assembly allotted to discuss people related issues was just one hour a day.
Urging the TVK government to prove their worth by developing government school and college hostels and raising their standards on par with private hostels, Premalatha said fighting in the Assembly would do no good to anybody. She wanted good government hostels in her constituency of Vridhachalam.
