Political Temperature Soars, Voter Mindset In Flux

DMK is trying to iron out ‘power-sharing’ differences with Congress and seal a deal with DMK's Kanimozhi having met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi this week.

Tamil Nadu is witnessing a surge in election fever, with major parties stepping up their campaigns and conducting intense parleys with allies for seat-sharing.

Last Friday, in a first election rally, Prime Minister Modi along with leaders of NDA allies launched a frontal attack on the ruling DMK and said the massive crowd turnout had sent across a loud message that Tamil Nadu is ready for change.

On the other hand, DMK is trying to iron out ‘power-sharing’ differences with Congress and seal a deal with DMK's Kanimozhi having met Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi this week.

With Vijay’s TVK disrupting the state’s traditional bipolar political landscape, the narrative of this election has taken a new turn. Vijay has ruled out alliances with the Dravidian majors and BJP and said his party will contest all 234 seats independently. His party is likely to get DMK's urban and minority support while denting AIADMK's traditional base. Also, he may be open to allies who accept him as the Chief Ministerial candidate.

Meanwhile, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) 2026 for electoral rolls in Tamil Nadu is currently in its final stages and Friday (January 30) is the final date for submitting claims or objections regarding entries in the draft SIR list. Following the disposal of all claims, the final electoral roll for the upcoming Assembly elections will be published. Earlier this month, senior Election Commission officials held a preparatory meeting with the chief electoral officers of four states and a Union Territory going to polls in the coming months. The coming Assembly elections are expected to be fiercely contested, with shifting voters’ attitude opening the door to new political alliances.
