GCC Asks Property Tax Defaulters to Pay Rs 847.80 Crore by Sept 30
The Corporation has asked property owners to clear both current and outstanding dues before September 30 to avoid further interest.

Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has called upon property owners to pay their pending and current property tax dues by September 30 as Rs 847.80 crore remains to be collected from over six lakh properties.
According to GCC Commissioner G S Sameeran, of the 14,15,771 property owners liable to pay property tax in the city, 8,12,539 have so far cleared their dues. The remaining 6,03,232 property owners owe a combined Rs 847.80 crore towards arrears and the current tax.
Property tax is the Corporation's primary source of tax revenue and is used to fund essential civic services, including infrastructure development, solid waste management, street lighting, maintenance of roads and parks, public health and disease prevention programmes, the Commissioner said.
Under Rule 268(1)(a) of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 2023, property owners are required to pay the tax for each half-year by the end of that half-year. Failure to do so attracts interest on the outstanding property tax from the following half-year, as provided under the rules.
The Corporation has asked property owners to clear both current and outstanding dues before September 30 to avoid further interest.
To facilitate payments, the Corporation has provided multiple channels, including its website, mobile application, payment links sent through its WhatsApp service, QR codes printed on property tax receipts and an automated payment facility at the Corporation headquarters for payments through cheques and demand drafts.
Property owners can also make payments through the Corporation's WhatsApp chatbot at 9445161913, through tax collectors using cheques or demand drafts, and directly at GCC zonal and ward offices.
The Commissioner appealed to property owners to pay their dues promptly and support the Corporation in carrying out essential civic services.
