Ooty: The Nilgiris district police administration, led by SP, S. Brinda, held an interaction with college managements in the Nilgiris on campus safety, anti-drug enforcement and student welfare aspects.
In a proactive measure to ensure student safety and strengthen law enforcement across educational institutions, the Nilgiris district police administration convened a district-wide coordination meeting with college administrators and management representatives.
The meeting focused on establishing rigorous compliance with safety, security, and student welfare protocols across all higher education institution campuses across the Nilgiris.
Addressing the institutional heads, the district police administration higher-ups asked for enforcement of a strict zero-tolerance policy against drug consumption and trafficking on and around campuses.
College managements were directed to actively track behavioural shifts, physical or dental indicators of substance abuse, and unexplained chronic absenteeism, with mandatory instructions to report any suspicious activities immediately to the local police.
Alongside substance control, institutions were reminded of their legal obligation to maintain fully operational internal complaints committees to ensure gender safety and prompt grievance redressal mechanisms while strictly enforcing anti-ragging laws through active campus monitoring squads.
To support student well-being beyond law enforcement, the police emphasized the critical need for proactive mental health interventions. The police officials stated that the institutions must establish robust counselling support to identify signs of severe distress early and prevent instances of self-harm.
Additionally, colleges were instructed to enforce road safety norms strictly among student commuters — focusing on mandatory helmet rules, valid licensing and speed control — and to conduct immediate security audits, ensuring fully functional camera surveillance across all key perimeter, entrance and exit points.
College managements were urged to work in close coordination with local police stations to maintain a safe and law-abiding educational environment.
