Nightmare For Motorists On Tambaram-Velachery Road

Rain in the last few days has added to the woes of people who slip on the road with their two-wheelers and an ambulance, too, overturned on Tuesday, injuring the driver and a nurse.

Chennai:The Tambaram-Velachery road has become a motorists’ nightmare with mud and slush covering the entire stretch since the work of laying pipes for the supply of drinking water from the Nemmeli desalination plant has been dragging on for months.

Rain in the last few days has added to the woes of people who slip on the road with their two-wheelers and an ambulance, too, overturned on Tuesday, injuring the driver and a nurse.

The pipes are being laid from Tambaram East and goes through Selaiyur, Camp Road, Sembakkam, Medavakkam and Pallikaranai till Anna Road at Guindy.

The Tambaram-Velachery road serves as an alternative road to GST Road and several educational institutions, residential areas and shopping malls are located on both sides of the road. The Metrowater department is laying pipes along the road to supply drinking water from the Nemmeli desalination plant to the city.

The road has been dug up on one side to lay the large pipes and the pits have not been closed in places where the work has been completed. The road has become muddy and slushy with potholes and cracks at several places. The rains during the last few days have turned the road into a nightmare for vehicle-users.

Besides, the potholes are filling with rainwater, making it difficult for road-users to spot them.

This leads to accidents on the road and an ambulance met with an accident on Tuesday. The driver lost control of the vehicle and the vehicle dashed against a roadside wall and overturned. The injured driver and nurse were rescued by the people and sent to Tambaram district headquarters hospital. There is a tailback of vehicles at many places since the riders move slowly on the slush and potholes. The people complained that the pipe-laying work has been progressing very slowly and the highways department has not re-laid the road where the work has been completed.

The highways officials said the road work could not be taken up till the road is handed over to them. They have requested the Metrowater authorities to complete the pipe-laying work soon. Once the pipes are laid, the department will re-lay the road, they said.
