Chennai: A new university named after M Karunanidhi would be started soon at Kumbakonam, which was part of the undivided Thanjavur district in which the DMK leader was born, in response to the request made by several political party leaders in the Assembly, Chief Minister M K Stalin said on Thursday.
Making the announcement on the floor of the House, Stalin said Karunanidhi’s contribution towards making the State excel in education was phenomenal and today many of the educational institutions had become a model of other States or even touched global standards because of him.
Among the leaders who demanded the starting of a university named after Karunanidhi under Rule 55 of the Assembly were K Selvaperunthagai (Congress), G K Mani (PMK), Sinthanai Selvan (VCK), V P Nagai Maali (CPM), T Ramachandran (CPI), Southern Thirumalaikumar (MDMK), M H Jawahirullah (MMK), E R Easwaran (Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi), T Velmurugan (Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi) and Speaker M Appavu.
The announcement on the new university named after Karunnidhi was welcomed by the members and many of them spoke on the significance of locating in Kumbakonam.
Making another announcement while speaking on the ‘Naan Mudhalvan’ (I am Leader) scheme of his government, the Chief Minister said that all the candidates from Tamil Nadu who had cleared the latest Civil Services examination of the UPSC would be felicitated on Saturday.
Stalin said that he would be attending the felicitation at the Anna Administrative Staff College, where Civil Service aspirants, selected for special coaching, from the State were trained.
The Chief Minister spoke in detail about the Naan Mudhalvan scheme that was launched with a view to developing the skills of youth after DMK member V Vetri Azhagan spoke of the success of the scheme, praising it and also raising doubts about its implementation.
Various measures were taken for skill development of youth and the training for civil services aspirants had started showing good results now, he said, adding that of the total 57 candidates from the State who had cleared the examination this year, 50 of them were beneficiaries of the Naan Mudhalvan scheme.
Under the scheme started after the number of candidates clearing the UPSC examination started dwindling in 2006, selected beneficiaries preparing for the preliminary examination were paid Rs 7500 per month for 10 months and those preparing for the main examination were given Rs 25,000 lumpsum, he said.
Since it was the duty of the DMK government to ensure that those at the fringes of society, too, realized their legitimate dreams, the scheme would continue touching the lives of more youth in the process, he said.
