More Women in Tamil Nadu to Get Rs 1000 Assistance Every Month

Chennai: Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai, a flagship welfare programme of the DMK government, under which poor women are given a monthly assistance of Rs 1000 every month, will be expanded on Saturday taking the number of beneficiaries to around 1.30 crore from the present 1,13,75,492 to enlarge the scope of measure aimed at ushering in more gender equality in the State.

Chief Minister M K Stalin is scheduled to preside over the event at Nehru Indoor Stadium at 3 pm on Saturday in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin with social activist and Padma Bhushan awardee Krishnamal Jaganathan and Badminton paraolympian Thulasimathi Murugesan who represented India at Guangzhou taking part in it.

Announced by Stalin in the State Assembly on March 27, 2023, the welfare scheme that enhanced women’s economic independence with the beneficiaries receiving Rs 27,000 each since the inception of the programme had earned accolades from several quarters.

The second phase of the expansion would see lakhs of women, who were left out in the initial selection of beneficiaries, brought into the scheme, under which the assistance of Rs 1000 has been credited to the accounts of the women every month without fail.

The event at Nehru stadium will also celebrate the success of women in diverse areas and highlight the DMK government’s dedication to ensure the development of women in various fields through a plethora of measures like the free bus service for women, promotion of women entrepreneurs and other health and welfare schemes.
