Milk ATM Debuts At Ooty Charing Cross Area

Ooty's first modern milk vending machine or “Milk ATM” was installed by the Aavin Nilgiris near the Uzhavar Sandhai in the Charing Cross area

Nilgiris: As directed by the Madras High Court in order to reduce the use of plastics in the hills, Ooty's first modern milk vending machine or “Milk ATM” was installed by the Aavin Nilgiris near the Uzhavar Sandhai in the Charing Cross area.

“This is a pilot scheme designed for the hills. The eco-friendly support installation contains a 200-litre insulated tank with an internal system to keep the milk chilled at the desired temperature. Customers can purchase milk in their own containers, stainless-steel cans or tumblers. The machine is designed to accept UPI QR-code payments, ATM debit cards and cash.
Its system calculates the quantity corresponding to the amount paid and dispenses that volume automatically. Software connected to the unit records stock levels and the length of time milk has been stored.
Aavin staffers use this information to monitor inventory and take steps for replenishment. The equipment also incorporates digital metering designed to show tampering, automated sanitation procedures and centralised monitoring. This eco-friendly mechanism is intended to provide bulk milk sales without single-use sachets and to support the reuse of customer-owned containers,” Aavin sources explained.

As many as 22 types of plastics are banned in the Nilgiris, including single-use plastic PET packaged water bottles.
