Mekedatu Issue: Bus Services Between TN and Karnataka Suspended From Erode

As a precautionary measure, police personnel had been deployed in large numbers along the interstate border

ERODE: Bus services between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka from Erode have been suspended following protests in the two States over the Mekedatu issue.

Farmers' organisations in Tamil Nadu have been continuing their protests against the Mekedatu project in Karnataka. Meanwhile, Kannada organisations in Karnataka had announced a protest on Wednesday condemning Tamil Nadu's opposition to the construction of the dam.

As a result, tension prevailed in the border areas between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. As a precautionary measure, police personnel had been deployed in large numbers along the interstate border. Bus services from Tamil Nadu and from Karnataka to Tamil Nadu have been temporarily suspended.

Though two government buses normally operated from Erode district to Karnataka via Bargur, the Karnataka-bound bus that left Erode has been halted near the Karnataka state border, according to the Erode regional transport manager.

Meanwhile, at the Karappalam check post located on the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border, Asanur police are conducting intensive inspections of all vehicles passing through as a precautionary security measure.
