Major Budget And Digital Initiatives For Tamil Development

CHENNAI: In a major push to preserve ancient heritage while expanding digital computing, the Tamil Nadu government has earmarked Rs. 139.06 crore for the Tamil Development and Information Department for 2026–2027, according to the state’s latest Policy Note tabled by Minister Rajmohan.

The comprehensive policy focuses on digitising rare palm-leaf manuscripts, expanding the 1.55-million-word “Sorkuvai” terminology portal, instituting new national literary honours, and providing targeted welfare measures for scholars and students worldwide.

Tabling the document in the Assembly Rajmohan, Minister for School Education, Tamil Development, Information and Publicity has presented a comprehensive blueprint outlines an extensive roadmap to preserve ancient Tamil heritage, modernise linguistic resources, and foster youth engagement globally.

A total revised budget estimate of Rs. 139.06 crore has been earmarked for the year, distributed across core institutions including the Directorate of Tamil Development, Tamil University in Thanjavur, the International Institute of Tamil Studies, the Directorate of Tamil Etymological Dictionary Project, and the World Tamil Sangam in Madurai.

Central to the policy is the digitisation and modernization of Tamil linguistic tools. The "Sorkuvai" online terminology repository has expanded significantly to host over 1.55 million terms, aiding the compilation of contemporary and technical glossaries. Simultaneously, the International Institute of Tamil Studies is rolling out key State Planning Commission-backed initiatives, such as an integrated digital palm-leaf manuscript database, video repositories for global higher education, and an international upgrade of its research library.

The policy also prioritises the welfare of scholars, the enforcement of the Tamil Nadu Official Language Act in administration and commercial signage, and literary outreach across schools and higher educational institutions statewide.
